Coal exists, because funghi didn't
At least, funghi that could digest the first trees, and the lignin in them to be precise. Also the reason Earth had so much oxygen during that time, which in turn enabled large megafauna such as dinonaurs and those meter long insects! All because dead trees were piling up! Amazing.
